5 Elements of Life: The Impossible Chemistry That Built You
Every living cell runs on just five elements — oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus. Chapter 2 of Life After Breath asks the question chemistry alone can’t answer: how did the 5 elements of life ever add up to a heartbeat?
This is Week 4 of a 52-week journey through Life After Breath: A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Consciousness — a new weekly series from The Explanation. Every Monday, a new chapter lands here, on YouTube, and in your inbox.
Last week’s chapter left the universe dialed in for life down to about 25 impossibly precise settings — and still not a single living cell to show for it. Chapter 2 picks the problem up exactly there. Not with more physics, but with biology’s own unsolved loop.
If rocks-to-cells is territory this site has covered before, that’s because it has — here’s the earlier, more scholarly dive into the same chapter. This week’s version tells it in fewer words, but doesn’t skip a single step of the argument.
Chapter 2: Life Biology: From Rocks to Cells. Possible?
Let’s get down to the miracle happening inside you right now. You are a walking, talking universe of tiny, self-sustaining chemical cities. Each of your 100 trillion cells is a marvel of engineering that puts any human factory to shame. And we have no idea how it started.
The biggest unsolved mystery in biology isn’t how apes turned into humans. It’s how dead rocks turned into living cells. This is the leap from geochemistry (stuff like dirt and water) to biochemistry (the stuff of life). And science is completely stumped.
Scientists like Dr. Nita Sahai are honest about it. They call their best ideas “plausible scenarios” that should be taken “with a grain of salt.” Why? Because life is a series of impossible loops.
The biggest loop is called the “Central Paradigm of Molecular Biology.” It goes like this:
- Your DNA holds the instructions to build proteins.
- But to read those instructions and build the proteins, you need… proteins (called enzymes).
- And to build those proteins, you need instructions from… DNA.
See the problem? It’s the ultimate chicken-and-egg dilemma. Which came first? The protein factory (DNA) or the workers (proteins)?
You can’t have one without the other. So how did the whole system just appear?
But let’s say, by some impossible chance, a tiny, primitive loop did form. That’s still not enough. For something to be truly alive, it has to do two more impossible things:

1. Sustain Itself (The Eternal Engine)
Life isn’t a one-time chemical reaction. It’s a perpetual motion machine. A living thing must find fuel, digest it, convert it into energy, use that energy to build and repair itself, and then take out the trash — all without ever stopping. Your body does this automatically, 24/7, without you ever thinking about it. We can’t create a machine that does this. Could blind, random nature figure it out?
2. Reproduce Itself (The Perfect Copy Machine)
True life must make more of itself. Not just once, but over and over, creating a self-sustaining population. This isn’t just copying; it’s copying with tiny, smart variations so that each generation can have variety. If life couldn’t reproduce perfectly yet change slightly, we’d all be identical, fragile clones that would have gone extinct immediately.

This entire miracle runs on a virtuous circle of just five basic elements: oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus.
These five simple ingredients are transformed into about 20 amino acids. Those amino acids are linked into millions of different proteins. Those proteins then work together to build and read… DNA. And the circle starts all over again.
You cannot start this circle anywhere. The entire loop — all of it — has to be present and functioning perfectly from the very first nanosecond. There is no “halfway to life.” It’s all or nothing.
This isn’t just a theory. This is the breathtaking, awe-inspiring reality happening in every one of your cells right now. It’s a blaze of amazement — a universe of interconnected processes working in perfect, split-second timing.
We can look at this and say it’s all a magnificent series of accidents against impossible odds. Or we can look at the sublime complexity and see the signature of a genius-level Designer.
The evidence isn’t just in the stars; it’s in your bloodstream. The question is, do you see a lucky accident, or do you see a masterpiece?
The Breakthroughs Behind the 5 Elements of Life
From Biology & Biochemistry:
Identifies the “Chicken-and-Egg” Paradox of Life’s Origin: It highlights the central, unsolved problem of abiogenesis: which came first, genes (DNA) or metabolism? DNA needs enzymes to be made, but enzymes are proteins coded for by DNA.
Defines the “Minimum Requirements” for Life: It cites Dr. Nita Sahai’s research stating that minimum life needs (1) a Membrane, (2) a Heritable and mutable system, and (3) Metabolic cycles — all of which must appear simultaneously for life to begin.
The “Virtuous Circle” of Chemical Life: It illustrates life not as a linear process but as an irreducible, closed loop (5 elements → amino acids → proteins → DNA → back to elements). This “all or nothing” system cannot be started piecemeal, posing a massive challenge to gradualist theories.
From Philosophy of Science:
The “Sustainability and Reproduction” Criterion: It argues that even if a self-replicating molecule were created in a lab, it would not constitute “life” unless it could sustainably fuel itself and reproduce successfully for multiple generations without external manipulation.
Challenges the “It’s Just Chemistry” Narrative: It reframes the conversation from “simple chemicals” to “orchestrated processes,” emphasizing the breathtaking timing, coordination, and synchronization of thousands of processes happening simultaneously in the simplest cell.
From Theology & Intelligent Design:
Presents Life as Positive Evidence, Not a Gap: The chapter moves beyond “God of the gaps” by presenting life’s complexity not as a gap in knowledge but as positive evidence of front-loaded information and coordination that points to an intelligent cause.
Uses Scientific Language to Build a Theological Case: By focusing on science’s own admitted limitations and the language of speculation (“could bes,” “maybes”), it builds a cumulative case for looking beyond materialism, making a theological conclusion seem like a rational inference from the data.
FAQ: 5 Elements, One Impossible Loop
What are the 5 elements of life?
Oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus. Chapter 2 calls them the 5 elements of life because every living cell — yours included — is built from nothing more exotic than these five, combined into roughly 20 amino acids, then linked into millions of proteins.
How do 5 elements of life turn into a living cell?
That’s the part nobody can fully explain. The five elements build amino acids, the amino acids build proteins, and those proteins turn around and build and read the DNA that coded for them in the first place — DNA needs enzymes, enzymes need DNA, and the whole loop has to be running before any single piece of it can work.
Why can’t the 5 elements of life just accidentally become life?
Because the loop can’t be built one piece at a time. There’s no “DNA first, then enzymes later” — the chapter argues an entire, functioning loop would have to appear all at once, from nothing, for life to get started at all.
What else does something need, besides the right chemistry, to actually count as alive?
Two more things, per the chapter: it has to sustain itself (a fuel-in, waste-out engine running 24/7, forever) and reproduce itself (copying itself with just enough variation to survive across generations). Getting the chemistry right isn’t enough on its own — Chapter 2 calls these life’s other two “impossible things.”

This is post four from the book Life After Breath. This chapter’s own loop stays unsolved — next week, chapter 3 asks whether a physical brain can actually create a non-physical mind, or whether that’s an even bigger leap than rocks becoming cells.
