Mental health is probably the most precious possession each of us owns. You are your mind, and your mind is you.
Mental health is a significant issue nowadays. I dare say we tend to pay more attention to our bodies than our minds. Are we taking care of the physical and letting the mind go to pot? Concretely and metaphorically?
(Audit of the Universe, chapter 9.2)
Last week I started this chapter by referring you to a list of diverse emotions, sentiments, moods, psychological, and medical attitudes. I asked you the question: Where do these moods, feelings, and emotions reside in your body if they’re in your body at all?
These last seven and the future chapters in Audit of the Universe have a double objective:
- To address the ‘state of the union-individuals-nations-universe.’ How is humankind doing in a particular area? In this chapter: How are our minds faring?
- To define more precisely the ‘pieces of the puzzle.’ In this chapter: The mind. We’re continuing to turn over pieces of the puzzle to make it clear what’s at stake. If we don’t know the basics, how can we go on to the more complex? If we don’t possess all the pieces of the puzzle, how can we possibly put it all together and see a final clear picture? With that in mind, what is the mind?
State of Mind
Today, by discussing mental disorders, we will deal with the state of the mind and also be pointed in the direction of what is involved in the mind. Mental health and aspects associated with the mind are very complex and encompass numerous phenomena that are difficult to explain. I will point out some of them while discussing mental health.
Let’s go straight to the comprehensive picture with the World Health Organization: Depression tops the list of causes of ill-health. 30 MARCH 2017 | GENEVA – Depression is the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from WHO, more than 300 million people are now living with depression. That’s an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.
WHO statistics paint a bleak picture. Common mental health disorders refer to a range of anxiety and depressive disorders. Globally, it is estimated that 4.4% of the global population suffers from a depressive disorder, and 3.6% from an anxiety disorder. We’re talking about almost 600,000,000 people. By comparison, Europe’s population is about 760 million people.

Share on XSimilar situations are prevalent in the USA and UK: At any time, one in six adults has a mental health condition, and one in 100 has a severe mental illness. People with mental ill-health die younger, and a greater proportion has poor physical health compared to the general population. These differences are most profound for people with serious mental illnesses, such as psychosis or bipolar disorder, who die on average 10 to 17 years earlier than the general population.

Share on XThis blog post is probably the most depressing I’ve ever written and might ever write. There are gigantic catastrophes like the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that snuffed out 230,000 lives in Asia and East Africa in 2004. But there is no other long-term health illness as debilitating and perplexing as mental disorders.
Here’s a website reference to mental disorders that delves into some major but common types like anxiety disorders: mood disorders, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, impulse control and addiction disorders, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and some less common types of mental illnesses including: Stress response syndromes emotional or behavioral symptoms because of stressful situations.
Dissociative disorders due to overwhelming stress, factitious disorders, complaining of physical symptoms to place oneself in the role of a person needing help. Sexual and gender disorders affecting sexual desire and performance. Somatic symptom disorders, experiencing physical symptoms with no known medical cause. Tic disorders display repeated uncontrolled body movements: sleep-related problems, variations of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.
It, unfortunately, points out that mental health disorders are growing faster among kids than adults. This blog post has the intention of making you aware of mind-related matters that can affect mental health both positively and negatively. This chapter focuses on the psychological, which is associated with the mind.
It does stay general because my goal is to motivate you to think about practical everyday situations, emotions, thoughts, and activities in your environs. I would like you to realize we take a lot of this for granted, but it’s much deeper than you might think. There are a lot of unanswered questions, and I won’t get into the answers about the mind in Audit of the Universe. I’ll go very far in showing you and affirming that it is not a part of the physical brain—not any part of the body.
You can read Origin of the Universe where I not only show you what the mind is but why each human must have a mind and what its purpose is. In the meantime, ponder the origin of the following ‘phenomena’ related to the mental.
One has to be very careful when talking about these because they are related to medical and religious fields. Many go so far as to feel that through these mind-practices, they can reach peace and even God. They use practices like demon attribution, uncontrolled rhythmic dancing, rhythmic drums and other instruments, exorcism, personal near-death experiences, out-of-body and paranormal experiences, speaking in tongues, automatic writing, composing, singing, painting, and other incoherent practices like visions and interpreting dreams.
Other psychological mind phenomena include multi-personalities, hypnotism, mesmerism, black magic, reading minds, fortune-telling, charlatanism, trances, transcendental meditation, and mindfulness. You can add to this list in the comments, and I will add to it as more such phenomena surface.
All the above practices help people reach a high. There’s no doubt that from a human perspective, lives are being changed by these experiences, like Ayahuasca and its healing retreats. People do reach more peace, serenity, calmness, They can and do replace anxiety and guilt. Yes, there are pros, but are there cons, even unsuspected consequences? Is there a false sense of security, thinking that a personal experience is an answer to major questions in life? Is this ‘state of mind,’ this ‘peace of mind,’ which is the quest, maybe the goal of these searchers and practitioners, the right road to follow? It’s up to you to answer this question.
Below on this page, you’ll find some recent news articles about ‘mind’ related to Audit of the Universe. They give you an overall light into what mind is and how humankind is treating this important issue:

Brain images display the beauty and complexity of #consciousness http://buff.ly/2sXbjwv Extremely intricate; these images only display little parts of the brain. It’s impossible to imagine the complexity of all these pieces working together instantaneously and continually to oversee the life of each one of us.
